  Goddamn US Open... I'm never gonna get any sleep if this keeps up... I started watching the Del Potro vs Hewitt match last night and didn't turn it off... just as well as it was a cracking match-up and I thought that Del Potro had done enough, but the #6 seed goes out after Lleyton Hewitt takes him to 5 sets 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 7-6, 6-1. Seems there's still fight left in the old dog yet although another title is not going to happen for him I'm afraid.
  
  Then of course, once that was over, Serena had to play her match against Yaroslava Shvedova, and she came through a bit easier 6-3, 6-1 at 6.05am this morning, and she'll now play Sloane Stephens.
  
  Now where's my pillow...

  Dan Evans tried his best but it was literally a case one drop shot too many as Tommy Robredo swats his attempt back over the net for a winner and takes it in 4 sets 7-6, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. Nothing to be sad about though for Dan, keep playing like this and he will climb those rankings (was 179th), and be picking up some bigger cheques...
  
  Federer had another easy match against Frenchmen Adrian Mannarino, winning comfortably 6-3, 6-0, 6-2.
  
  But Nadal and Ivan Dodig had a real slug fest of a match with some really hard hitting and although Nadal also won in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 the Croatian played better than that. though unfortunately so did Nadal... He's looking very fit and focused this tournament.
  
  
  For the women, Caroline Wozniacki lost 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 to Camila Giorgi (seeded 136) of Italy who had a big beaming smile afterwards and why not...
  
  Petra Kvitova only needed 2 sets to lose out to the American Alison Riske 3-6, 0-6, Kvitova apparently suffering from a fever, but something for the local crowd to cheer about.
  
  Both Ivanovic and Azarenka had to come from a set down to win their matches, it certainly was a day when the seeds struggled...

  It's the end of week 1 today and those hoping to make it to week 2 where it's gets harder are;
  
  Andy Murray vs Florian Mayer who are 2nd up on Arthur Ashe after a doubles match, following them are Serena and Sloane Stephens, and then Djokovic vs Sousa and finishing off on the showcourt is Jelena Jankovoc vs Li Na probably at some early hour in the morning... Whoever's got either day and evening tickets for that stadium should be happy...
  
  Louis Armstrong ticket holders should also be satisfied as Wawrinka nd Baghdatis start the day there, that should be a good tussle, followed by Suarez-Navarro vs Kerber, and Kerber may struggle here as S-N has seemed to have been playing the better tennis so far... 3rd up is Haas vs Youzhny, another probable tight match, and to round the evening off will be Aggie Radwanska vs Russia's Makarova.
  
  So if you're watching on either Sky or Eurosport you should have a good match to watch...

  Andy Murray had his usual slow start to the match yesterday, although he did have a good chance to break Mayer's first service game, he didn't and it went all the way to a tie-break which he won convincingly 7-2, and then decided he better start to play and it looked like he demoralised Mayer as he came through 7-6, 6-2, 6-2.
  He will now face the Uzbekistani Denis Istomin who beat the 20th seed Seppi in 5 sets... Don't expect Murray will have any problems there...
  
  Djokovic fairly breezed past the Portuguese Sousa 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 and he will next play Spain's Marcel Granollers who beat the American Smyczek in 5 sets, again not expecting any trouble with that match up...
  
  
  
  Serena and Sloane Stephens battled it out at prime time TV viewing for the US audience and Serena looked mightily impressive in a 6-4, 6-1 win... It's hard to see anyone else taking the title in the form she is in...
  
  Aggie Radwanska won't have the chance as she got beaten by Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 6-4 and Carla Suarez-Navarro did indeed beat the 8th seed Angelique Kerber, coming back from a set down 4-6, 6-3, 7-6...
  For her troubles CS-N will now face Serena...
  
  and to round off for the women Li Na only needed 2 sets to beat Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 6-0.

  No play in New York yet as it's tipping down...
  When (if) it stops Federer vs Robredo is supposed to be 3rd up on Arthur Ashe and Kohlschreiber vs Nadal 4th up and 1st of the evening matches... although I suppose they could juggle matches around other courts to try to get all matches completed today.
  
  Before the Federer match, Ivanovic is taking on Azarenka, 13th plays 2nd seed and the one to watch today..
  Also Camila Giorgi, remember her? she beat Wozniacki and she gets to play her fellow countrywoman 10th seed Roberta Vinci, supposed to be first match on Grandstand court... Can she do it again...

  we need all the tennis fans we can get on here there aren't many. the mens draw is gonna go pretty much to plan, i reckon djokovic murray and roanic nadal semi finals.

  I think Djokovic has had it way too easy so far and will do to the semis, Murray will have a fight with Wawrinka / Berdych but see him winning in 4 sets to reach the semi, and a match up with Djokovic...
  
  Nadal also for the semi's, and Robredo could do Federer which would be interesting, but whichever one wins, they won't beat Nadal... which leaves the other semi finalist which may well be Ferrer instead of Raonic, Raonic tends to choke, and Ferrer has a better game, if he's ok.
  
  
  There's been some play, although been suspended again
  
  21st seed Halep lost the first set to Pennetta 2-6, but is 5-4 in the 2nd...
  
  and the American Alison Riske lost her first set 3-6 to Hantuchova and it is 4-4 in the 2nd...

  agree djokovic has it easy till semi. i think murray would much rather play wawrinka than berdych who he struggles with. i think roanic has looked very solid so far and if he plays as well as he can he'll blow ferrer off the court.
