  Well the rain finally let up yesterday and after some intense drying of the courts play resumed...
  
  Camila Giorgi had already lost to Roberta Vinci in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 though, still a good run for her and a bundle of ranking points too...
  
  Seeded 21st, Simona Halep also lost in straight sets to Italian Flavia Pennetta 2-6, 6-7, and now Pennetta will face her Italian mate Vinci in the quarters...
  
  No fairytale for the American Alison Riske either after coming back from a set down, Daniela Hantuchova took the 3rd set 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 and she'll have to wait to see who she will face because the match between Ivanovic and Azarenka was rescheduled to be first match on Arthur Ashe today...
  
  
  
  There'll be no 6th US open for Roger Federer as Tommy Robredo did in fact 'do' him 7-6, 6-3, 6-4. Federer only converted 2 of 16 break points to allow Robredo to stay in the game, and he took it... It's also the first year since 2002 that Roger has failed to make a Grand Slam final, is this the beginning of the end for Federer???
  
  Robredo though will be looking forward (or maybe not) to a quarter final match with Nadal who lost the first set to Kohlschreiber, then came back and won it in 4, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-1, but he also only managed to take 5 out of 21 break points.
  
  David Ferrer duly beat Janko Tipsarevic in 4 sets, 7-6, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 in a tight match and he will play #8 seed Richard Gasquet who needed all 5 sets to see of Milos Raonic 6-7, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5 in another brutal match.
  That's Ferrer vs Nadal in the semi for my liking...

  So who's playing today...
  
  First up on Arthur Ashe is Ivanovic and Azarenka who play their match delayed from yesterday, following them is Ekaterina Makarova vs Li Na, and it's tata to Makarova in 2 sets I think. Li will then play Serena in the semi's, as long as she beats Carla Suarez-Navarro, who are the 1st game in the evening session on Ashe, and again if Serena plays as she did against Sloane Stephens, that will also only be a 2 setter...
  
  In between the Li Na and Serena match is Djokovic vs Granollers... really, how did Djokovic get this draw, it's way too easy for him...
  Then to round off the evening's play on Ashe is Andy Murray vs the unseeded Denis Istomin, and it's about time Murray started a bit better in his matches, and if he does, 3 sets again... It will be good timing to start peaking in the second week, ready for his semi final clash with Djokovic later in the week...
  
  Second match on Louis Armstrong is 21st seed Mikhail Youzhny vs that man Lleyton Hewitt, and Hewitt could do it, he's like a man possessed this tournament, probably his last try at glory but whoever wins will face Djokovic midweek in the quarters so endgame...
  Wawrinka and Berdych then complete the matches on Armstrong for the evening, the winner to face Murray? in the quarters...

  Vika Azarenka has come through in 3 sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) in another belter. Ana Ivanovic had a great first set, but seemed to lower her game in the 2nd, and Azarenka upped hers, giving Vika the way back in, and then Ivanovic managed to save 3 match points in the third set but alas could not save the 4th as she returned the ball into the net.
  Vika will now face Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova on Wednesday.

  ivanovic is so inconsistent it's crazy, i'd hate to be her coach, would drive you nuts. she hits the ball so clean and plays great points, then makes unbelievable errors.

  Yes, she is a bit frustrating, she totally lost her serve after the first set, that's all she had to do, was win her service games and the match was hers, it wasn't as if Vika was playing that brilliantly... She needs an Ivan Lendl type person to coach her I think, someone who can get her to knuckle down and sort out her demons...
  
  
  Li Na beat Ekaterina Makarova earlier, but it took her 3 sets to do it, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2. Li had a break of serve in the second, but couldn't capitalise on that as the Russian broke back, then took the tie break 7-5. She will now meet...
  
  Serena Williams who just took apart Carla Suarez-Navarro with a double bagel, needing just 19 minutes to take the first set 6-0 and another 33 minutes to take the second as Suarez-Navarro whacks it into the net to give the win to Serena in what was most certainly a one sided match. Serena means business.......

  What can you say about the Lleyton Hewitt vs Mikhail Youzhny match apart from wow... Hewitt had his chances as he led 4-1 in the 4th and 5-2 in the 5th sets to take the match, but he let the Russian back in both times and paid the ultimate price. Youzhny goes through 6-3, 3-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 to have a date with Djokovic in the quarters...
  
  Djokovic earlier dispatched Marcel Granollers in straight sets 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, lets hope Youzhny gives him a better fight...
  
  
  
  Andy Murray had his usual so-so start losing the first set in a tie break to Denis Istomin who to be fair was playing pretty well and deserved the set, but then Murray had an early break in the 2nd set and that flashed past 6-1 to Murray. After that Murray had the edge but Istomin had chances he could have taken... Murray wins 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4... and he will face...
  
  Stanislas Wawrinka who after losing his first set to Tomas Berdych 3-6, decided he wanted the win badly enough and also needed only 4 sets, coming through 3-6, 6-1, 7-6, 6-2.
  
  Murray will probably be happy with that, but can't be too complacent... I wonder how much the weight of being reigning champion is affecting him? It must be on his mind a bit...

  US OPEN DAY 10... Who's up...
  
  The women's quarter finals are completed today with Roberta Vinci against her fellow Italian Flavia Pennetta first up on Arthur Ashe. The 10th seed Vinci should have the game to see off Pennetta, but it could go to 3 sets.
  Third match and first of the evening's play is Daniela Hantuchova vs Vika Azarenka, and if Azarenka plays as piss poorly as she did against Ivanovic, then Hantuchova will be finding herself in the semi's. If you're still awake at midnight, tune on to watch this one, it should be most interesting...
  
  
  As the women's quarters finish, then the men's just begin with 8th seed Richard Gasquet vs 4th seed David Ferrer, who are second up on Ashe... It's 5-1 to Ferrer and I can't see Gasquet making it 5-2 today. when Ferrer wins it will set up an all Spanish semi final with the winner of...
  
  19th seed Tommy Robredo vs 2nd seed Rafa Nadal, who will be the early morning (for us) and last match on Ashe... so it's Nadal then lol...
  Nadal was made to work in his previous match with Kohlschreiber, so if Robredo can play the match of his life, he has a chance, and it will be interesting to see this match as it should show whether Nadal peaked too soon, or if he's still on fire...
  I guess it's another late night / early morning for me....

  i expect a fairly comfortable win for nadal, robredo doesn't have a weapon to beat nadal where Kohlschreiber served huge and could play big to hold off nadal.

  It should be comfortable for Nadal, especially as he will know Robredo's game... I can't forsee any problems, just like to think he can have an off day... as well as the likes of Murray and Djokovic hoping so too lol...
  
  
  Flavia Pennetta needed just 65 minutes and 2 sets to beat Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-1. The first set was a mixture of breaks and break backs but Pennetta held hers when it mattered, and in the second her serve was by far the better. It looks like she has fully recovered from her injury and outclassed Vinci, who I thought would come through this one. Well done Flavia, first time into the semi's...

  it looks highly likely that it will be a williams azarenka final and everyone thinks its williams trophy, but she keeps finding a way to lose in the grand slams this year as a big favourite.
