  Trouble with 10 is this, while it had some good characters and the plot came over well, it could be a bit cringeworthy at times. And the final boss, what was the point?!

  Oh and my party in VII was usually Cloud (obviously), Cid and Barret. I liked all of them, but the final limit breaks for red, vincent and yuffie weren't up to scratch.

  I also found with 10 that fights were not difficult at all. With no punishment or waiting for next turn when swapping out characters, you could instantly choose character that could 1-hit the enemy and be done with it.

  i only every played 7 and 8 and 8 is my favourite, but everyone i know says 7 is the best, maybe because 8 is newer i liked it more... nice and long as well which is good

  I've played the exact same two as you 7 and 8,
  but i much prefered 7, i almost bought one of the later ones 13 i think, but decided not to incase the story followed on from any of the games i hadn't played.

  If you do feel like buying any of the other ones Jesslloydfan then feel free. None of the future games follow on from any of the others, unless it is titled as a sequel eg: Final Fantasy X-2.
  
  There are some recurring themes in all of them such as chocobos and moogles, but no continuing story.

  8 is a very good game, but I thought the plot was a bit wishy washy. There was a logical progression in 7, as the stakes were raised and the plot evolved from you being in a small ideological group to actually trying to save the world, all while finding out about the characters pasts. There were a lot of "wtf" moments in 8 *SPOILER ALERT* such as when you find out they were all in the same orphanage, but had just forgotten because of GFs, so GFs give you selective memory loss, but who gives a shit about that lets keep using them. Stuff like that was just needless tosh. Loved the laguna dream sequence idea, though it could have been done better at times.

  yea but c'mon a LOT of japanese movies and stuff are like that - really weird with their story, i think a lot of it doesn't make sense, especially the way they translate the dialog etc
  
  but i remember the first time i played it in like 2000 or something, i was SO impressed with how they merge the gameplay with the cinematics

  Doesn't make it right though! A lot of them had out there plots, but it felt like there was a lot of unconnected shit thrown into 8 just to pad it out.

  Did anyone play xiii? I really liked it, although I can admit it had its flaws! I really liked the battle system once it got going and the story was classic final fantasy.

  I hated it.
  The battle system made some ordinary battles, just normal enemies, take ages to kill if you didn't have the right setup, or couldn't get your combos going.
  
  3 20 minute fights in a row, then just closed the game and never played it again.
  
  I haven't like any of the releases since 10 to be honest. None of them seem to have that 'feel' that they used to have, like I never feel like I properly know the characters and the story.
  
  Hopefully they will ditch the whole new battle system, and go back to something fairly similar to the turn based combat in 10.
