  the world cup is played by teams who are nowhere near as used to playing together as they are for their club at the end of a long and gruelling season - so of course the world cup is a lower standard than champions league

  I think it's fair enough to have a member of that German squad included in the final 3, and when you take his performances for Bayern alongside what he did at the World Cup, Neuer is probably the most deserving.

  never,messi did not do as well as any german at the world cup,any team can assemble a champions league team if you got a mega rich tycoon in charge,world cup teams you just put up with what you got and make them good,the best team in the world wins the world cup but not the best team wins the champions league,you can come fourth and win it and watch the champions of that same league go out,so the winners are nowhere near as good as the world cup winners,if germany played real madrid, real would probably win but that is only cos they got over extortionate waged players playing for them from all over the world, off course they are going to come to europe,a german deserves to win it cos he helped his country win the biggest trophy on earth the other two what did they do in that tournament nothing put them up against the best in the world they were crap,so if you can finish fourth and win the champions league that just proves the best team wins the world cup and is bigger and better cos you got the elite from that country playing together NOT just picked wrong pieced jigsaw players from all over the place just to make that jigsaw look good,so come on Neuer

  Appreciate your point Goons, and if we were talking about the team of the year then Germany, obviously. But it's difficult to single out an individual from that side to put forward. Neuer's there just as much for his performances for Bayern, though if we were going on the World Cup alone there's probably seven or eight others just as deserving.
  
  Yes clubs can throw a fuckload of money around and buy success, but I suspect Ronaldo and Messi would still be at (or very close to) the level they are currently wherever they played. Individual brilliance, player of the year, it has to be about that.

  Wouldn't say Messi was crap. Certainly not up to his usual standard, but if it was anyone else we'd have been impressed. Ronaldo, fair enough. He didn't exactly shine.
  
  But their performances over the course of the whole year mean they have to be considered favourites for the award. Ronaldo's played 55 games in total this calendar year, scored 55, made 19 assists and picked up a Champions League winners medal. Three games at a World Cup (though he did score in one of them and get named MOTM) shouldn't detract from that.
