I also think it helps you empathise with others on the other side of the world who live much poorer lives than us but who can still be gloriously happy. If we only knew it, the richer you get the poorer your life may become. Happiness comes from within not from outside ourselves.Eloquently said, GrandDuke. I have had similar experiences with people in China and India.
Travelling the world and seeing children walking for 4 hours to get to school in the middle of the night, and going up and down a mountain while doing that, certainly puts our nation's children to shame who don't want to go to school. I will never forget how happy they looked when they realised that I was English and they could practise what they ahd been learning on a real English person. This was in the Philippines which is as close to Thailand as I have been.

I have watched a male tiger at point blank range from the back of an elephant in India, likewise Indian One-horned Rhino in Nepal as well as did a Himalayan trek there, filmed poisonous Green Mambas fighting just feet from my face in The Gambia, travelled in a sinking canoe on the massive Ventuari River in Venezuela, 24 hours from the nearest town in the Amazon, been blessed in voodoo ceremonies by witch doctors in the Philippines and Cameroon before walking on their sacred mountain and seen amazing starlit skies in various parts of the Amazon when walking in the pitch black without torches. I feel very grateful for the many adventures I have had and the things that I have seen.
I did almost all this when I was working and had money but have only managed to afford one holiday in the last 7 years since and that was a very tame week by comparison in the Camargue, Southern France but still very enjoyable.
