i'm also not a fan of sonys pricing in general, for example when the first xbox came out, which i bought on day of release, it was over priced, microsofts answer was to send everyone who bought at the higher price, two games of their choice and a controller which retail price came to more than the price drop.
when sony realised they were overpriced, they dropped the price but they did it by getting rid of the memory card readers, the backwards compatibility and some other decent features that everyone wanted

also microsoft had no chance with hd dvd, mainly because sony own a lot of film companys and those they didn't own they forced into exclusive contracts, so microsft were left with only one or two companys that were even allowed to put there films on hd dvd, which is a shame really as the quality of hd dvd's was extremely close to blue ray, and the films were cheaper on it as well, but unfortunately hd dvd did go the way of betamax ad minidiscs etc..
not that blu ray will be around for much longer as pretty much every company has said they want to go the way of digital downloads and the only thing that's really holding them back is the current broadband infrastructure in place, that's currently getting overhauled. but that's way off topic so i'll stop there
