as for the console's not needing to be updated i can understand how it seems that way but believe it or not it's not the case mate, think of it this way they're both about 7 yrs old or so, which means obviously the hardware inside is 7 years old, now think of a pc and how out of date a 7yr old pc is, it would be nearly impossible to game on one that old now with any decent results.
i'm not saying for a second that games on either the ps3 or 360 look bad, however it takes a lot of trickery and knowing how to exploit the hardware when we're writing code to get the hardware to be able to produce those results, when the new consoles come out, whenever that might be, it will open the floodgates as it were to get truly great performance without having to kind of trick the hardware.
you can see the difference that the hardware makes if you look at a current top spec pc running a game and the same game on a console.
but as previously mentioned sony themselves have said they have no plans for a new ps for quite a long time, microsoft also haven't said they will be announcing one either but there's strong rumours about it so it's more likely than a new ps

the main thing new hardware will allow is for truly high fps rates, better definition, more detail throughout the whole picture not just fore and middle ground etc... the other difference is that it will be easier when codding as we won't have to trick the hardware into doing things, it'll just be able to do it etc...
the thing a lot of people don't realise as well is the fact that the current gen of consoles is one of the longest running gens we've ever had! which i think has helped to add credence to the idea of microsoft possibly unveiling something this E3 or next.
