  The quarter-finals begin tonight, but who of the eight sides left in the competition have what it takes to go on and win it?
  
  Bayern Munich 9/5
  Won it last year, and look even better this. Already Bundesliga champions, so they can rest key players for the European games, and they’ve got United in the quarters, which is basically a bye to the semis. 9/5 might seem generous, but it’s likely to fall once they’ve won by 3 or 4 at Old Trafford tonight, so get in quick.
  
  Real Madrid 3/1
  Shorter than Barca by dint of facing slightly weaker opposition this round, but the most likely Spanish contender regardless. Two reasons, Bale and Ronaldo (alright, Modric too, so three), they’ll pull anyone apart on their day, and those days just so happen to be pretty frequent. Could happen.
  
  Barcelona 4/1
  Messi’s fit and scoring again and if they can get past Atletico then there’s no reason why they can’t go all the way. Doing so won’t be easy though, and with that in mind 4/1 seems a bit short. Might be best to hold off on this one, see how it pans out and that.
  
  Chelsea 10/1
  They might not look like much at the moment, but they didn’t when they won it two years ago either. That’s your underdog-previous taken care of, and then there’s Mourinho, being Mourinho, with Mourinho-previous. Still unlikely, perhaps, but well worth a couple of quid at 10/1.
  
  Paris St Germain 12/1
  Petro-billions eh? Generally takes a while for the European domination to catch up with the domestic, just ask Man City. Could cause Chelsea some Zlatan-shaped problems, but probably a bit soon for them to go and actually win it.
  
  Atletico Madrid 20/1
  Doesn’t seem overly likely, granted, but they are top of La Liga, so 20/1’s a bit harsh. Did I say harsh? I meant amazing value. Also, Diego Costa.
  
  Dortmund 33/1
  Lovely football and everything, and thanks to Bayern their league campaign is over too. But Real….

  As for your question of when have stranger things have happened in regards to United, well, there's Porto in '04, there's Liverpool in '05, there's Chelsea in '12 etc etc

  Can't really speak for Porto (though the fact a team from the Portuguese league won is impressive enough in itself) but those Liverpool and Chelsea sides weren't as far away from the top of the table and as lacking in confidence as United are now.
  
  All 3 were unlikely, but a United win this season would top the lot.

  Actually, United are closer to the top than those Liverpool and Chelsea sides were. Liverpool finished 5th, 37 points off the top. Chelsea finished 6th, 25 points off the top. Right now United are 7th, 17 points off the top.

  Must confess I didn't look at point totals, just league positions.
  
  But after last night it seems a tiny bit more plausible anyway, well played.
  
  Still 33/1 to win it though. Surprising, thought the odds might have shortened.

  Real Madrid are by far the most exciting team in Europe at the moment. The energy they display going forward, the enrgy they display defending from the front. It is without comparison at the moment. Even Bayern Munich would have a tough time of it. But they still have issues with defence when the ball breaks into their half. So many time I have watched them concede goals from teams breaking on them. The worst of which was Sevilla's second last week. Still, in Europe, I think they are too motivated, and too special to falter this year. With Ancelotti in, and Mourinho out the way, they are a team. The tenth is looming.
