• Things To Look Out For This Summer Pt.1 - Southampton

  A Southampton Spree
  
  Obviously it all depends on how much of their wad an owner is willing to part with, but Southampton are technically one of the 4 or 5 richest clubs in the country. Last summer, after promotion from The Championship, they quietly spent £30m+ on the likes of Gaston Ramirez, Jay Rodriguez and Nathaniel Clyne. Not ridiculous money but a decent amount for a newly promoted side.
  
  In the year since then, they can look back on a reasonably successful first season back in The Premier League, with a respectable 14th place finish and some nice football played along the way. Nigel Adkins was controversially sacked in January but his replacement, Mauricio Pochettino, pulled off some impressive results in the second half of the season and clearly has the backing of the chairman, Nicola Cortese.
  
  Here’s a quote from Pochettino in response to rumours that Chelsea were after Luke Shaw, “Perhaps we will go and get some Chelsea players ourselves.”
  
  That comment should probably be taken with a pinch of salt, but it’s worth remembering that it came shortly after Cortese had negotiated renewed backing from the club’s owners. Along with the extra TV money, and the assumption that the club have more faith in Pochettino than they did in Adkins, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to assume that the £30m+ spent last summer will be eclipsed this time round.
  
  Some of the players being linked with the club include Davide Astori, Radja Nainngolan, Dejan Lovren and Ever Banega. While not household names in this country, they’re all well-regarded prospects in their respective leagues and those 4 combined would probably set you back around £50m. The club have strong links in and around Europe and with better value in those markets, these are the type of signings to expect.
  
  So it could be an interesting summer. Southampton fans, how much would you like to see spent, and who on?

  No sooner do I write that, they go and sign Diego Lovren. Impressive.

  These are exciting times for Southampton fans, Impressive young manager and owners that are willing to back him in the transfer market to add to an already impressive squad.
  
  Lovren is a great signing and what they really need in the middle of defence, a commanding centre back.

  Completely agree, it's just the sort of signing they need to help take them to the next level.
  
  Though after looking so dodgy at the back at the start of last season, they managed to tighten up and by the end it was scoring goals that was the problem.
  
  So next up will be a proven goalscorer I reckon, to help turn their dominance in to points. No bloody idea who it'll be mind...

  True they tightened up at the back on the new boss, Lovren will just make them that much stronger. They need a poacher, Lambert did well last season but he needs more help but if they are signing players the quality of Lovren then they are getting right knid of player IMO
  
  
  I heard from a friend who lives in the area that Scott Sinclair is a real possibilty, not sure about that one mind

  Can't see that'll be staying at City and he seems to be the sort of player they're going for (young). They could probably do with some more options on the wing.
  
  Another thing with Lambert is that he tends to drop deep and lay things on for others. Jay Rodriguez did well after Pochettino came in, but yeah, definitely more bodies needed.

  Someone like Defoe would work perfectly with Lambert IMO, but being a Spurs fan I dont want that :)

  What's desperate Briss? Defoe? Can't see that one happening. It'll be someone from the European leagues who we've only vaguely heard of, maybe on Football Manager or something.
