  I really enjoyed Sri Lanka when I went there, so I would recommend it too. I would best describe it as a sanitised India. The scenery and wildlife are great and the people very friendly. The food was much better than India too in my opinion. Mind you, I got food poisoning in the first 48 hours in India which may have prejudiced my view of their food for the rest of my holiday. The poverty was not so obvious there as it was in India, where it was in your face every day.
  
  My first ever trip to Thailand is next year when I will be experiencing the wilder side of the country (and I don't mean the night clubs!).

  I have only been to Holland France and Belgium in my life and that was in my teens and early twenties  Although I would have loved to have travelled but due to family problems and lack of funds havn't got the guts to fly and now getting a bit long in the tooth and No passport I'm wondering if I will get one

  Travelling is the best thing in erm the world. My mate is in Vietnam and another is going to meet him in 2 weeks. Was supposed to go but not been getting paid correctly and spent too much on this site.
  Not staying vip on here or calling again. Time to see more of this planet.

  Yes I was invited to Poland recently and I was very tempted to apply for a passport But they are expensive I know they last 10 years I wonder if I could get the full value I would have to travel on my own and not flying I dontthink I could justify it being a pensioner

  It is never too late to travel Tony. I had a friend who has sadly died now who went to Myanmar (formerly Burma) when in her 80s. She went to Panama and Brazil when in her seventies as well as Zimbabwe and South Africa. Travelling will enrich your life if not your bank balance. That is the approach I took which has taken me to many fabulous places on the planet, usually watching exciting wildlife.
  
  When you are young you rarely have the money or time to travel to travel and when you are older you may have both but lack the health to do so. I am just glad that I trekked on the Annapurna trail in Nepal when in my 40s whilst I was still (only just) fit enough to do so. Now I have lots of memories but very little money not surprisingly. But most importantly, no regrets.

  As for flying Tony, it is safer than driving you car. You can only die once (although make that twice in my case) and nothing is more guaranteed than that it will happen sooner or later, no matter how safe you play life. Fear is merely a state of mind and there is nothing more frightening than fear itself. Once I realised that I now try to embrace danger as a type of excitement rather than something to fear and life becomes much better from that point on.
  
  If you die before you get your full 10 years in with your passport why worry? You can't take your money with you when you die so make the most of it whilst you still have the chance. That is my motto although it does leave me rather financially constrained as a result.
  
  If you do not like the idea of travelling alone, there are many companies that provide a group experience holiday where you get the chance  to make new friends and have company throughout whilst professional leaders take care of all the day to day itinerary for you. All you have to do is relax and enjoy the trip. I have used many of these when not travelling with my own friends.

  as the grandduke says about traveling alone. might i suggest that you moot the idea of a thai chat fan trip to thailand and see how many people may be interested to go. probably too late to organise this year, people having to get the same time off from work booked and so on but i could see a situation where i would be able to travel and i think others too. in which case the girls may well be able to meet up with us all for a night in a bar.

  As GrandDuke has so eloquently made the case for travel, I won't restate it, but I have traveled to many parts of the world, made many precious friends along the way, and have those wonderful memories, photos, little souvenirs, etc. I agree that traveling with a group can really give you peace of mind and offer lots in the way of friendships and good experiences. You have to be careful about what kind of tour group it is, to whom they cater, what activities they offer, etc. But for older folks it's a great way to see the world. And they are not all hideously expensive. So journey on my friend!
