SIX HOT HATCHES FROM THE 1980S THAT ARE STILL ACE NOW
Chop in your Mondeo, pick up one of these on Auto Trader, then blow the difference on speakers, rims and neons...

Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2
1984-1991
[Image: 10zgz]
With a 1.8 engine kicking out 137hp it's not quite the quickest here, but it's definitely the most iconic. 30 this year and still looks great.

Peugeot 205 GTI
1984-1994
[Image: 10zgx]
Launched in the same year as the Golf, it wasn't quite as powerful (1.6 engine and 130hp) but it did handle like a go-kart. Swings and roundabouts innit...

Ford Fiesta XR2
1983-1989
[Image: xr2.jpg]
It might have only been in production for 6 years, but it was still terrorising the housing estates of Britain well in to the 90s. It's legacy is assured.

Ford Escort XR3/XR3i
1980-1990
[Image: 10zgw]
Even more popular than it's little brother, the XR3 was Britain's best selling hot hatchback of the 80s. Only 96hp apparently, and that's before they all got weighed down with fuck-off subs in the boot, but it was quick enough.

Vauxhall Astra GTE Mk2
1984-1991
[Image: 10zgy]
Those lucky enough to have the 156bhp GTE 16V model were looking at 0-60mph in under 7 seconds and a maximum speed approaching 140mph. Big boy shit.

Renault 5GT Turbo
1985-1990
[Image: 10zgt]
Squeeze the Renault 11's turbo engine in to the smaller and lighter 5 and you're away. Easy as that. A looker n'all.

Don't get to thinking everything was amazing though, this happened too...

MG Maestro EFI
1984-1991
[Image: 10zgv]
...and that's why MG got exiled to China.

Which one are you having?

Yeah that was the inspiration.

Not sure what they were doing with the Nova and that Fiesta though. These are all loads better! (Apart from the Maestro, obviously.)
