The odds on Poyet taking over have been slashed dramatically, so let’s have a look at the pros and cons of that one, and some of the other names in the frame, just in case he doesn’t fancy it…
Gus Poyet - 4/6
The overwhelming favourite to replace Di Canio, but reports suggest that the Uruguayan is unsure about accepting the role. Maybe he’s had a look at the squad and doesn’t think he can keep them up? Maybe he’s holding out for a better offer? As well as he did at Brighton, it seems unlikely that he’d get a bigger club than Sunderland though, and if he did take them down you’d imagine most of the blame would be heading Di Canio’s way regardless. It might not look particularly appetising at the moment, but if he can steer them towards mid-table, sending a team out to play in front of 40,000+ fans every other weekend isn’t the worst job in the world by any means. You can’t lose Gus!
Steve McClaren - 9/1
Given his spell at Middlesbrough, it’s unlikely this would go down particularly well with the fans. There’ll be concerns over which McClaren shows up too. The supporters could probably learn to love the one who lifted the League Cup on Teeside and the Dutch championship at Twente, but the England/Wolfsburg/Forest flop, less so. For that reason, he’s probably too much of a gamble, and after Di Canio, the Sunderland board are most likely done with those.
Roberto Di Matteo - 9/1
The early favourite, he was evens on Monday morning, has slipped to nines. Like Poyet, there’s talk of him holding out for something better, but unlike Poyet, he’s got a Champions League win on his CV and could probably get it. He’d undoubtedly be a popular choice with the fans though, and his success at West Brom proves he can operate at the lower end too. But if he’s not interested, what can you do?
Tony Pulis - 10/1
A decent record at Stoke, but with Sunderland geared up for a more technical style than the Potters’ ‘agricultural’ approach, is this a particularly good fit? He’d hardly be the type of appointment to inspire the supporters either. 10/1 seems short to me.

I suppose it depends how badly the Sunderland board want a 'name' or if they want someone who will get stuck in regardless of the hyperbole surrounding the job in hand, and of course trying to sort out who the hell makes up their best team...
With an almost 'nothing to lose' attitude to an appointment for the board, I'm going with a Mr A. N. Other - which'll mean Gus Poyet signs Monday morning lol... -

On the subject of Di Canio, what a joke that has turned out to be for Sunderland, the guy was always going to be a complete failure at this level, you can't go about telling you players they are a disgrace etc.. in public and expect to have them play for you. Genius footballer but he's a got a couple of screws loose I think
Hard to say who'll replace him, Di Matteo may come and do a good job but will probably end up being recruited for a bigger club somewhere down the line. Poyet looks an interesting one, he did a good job at Brighton and knows the Championship well which is where they could end based on the garbage Di Canio brought in -

Haha, not mincing your words then...
Though you're not wrong either. I still think there's enough time for someone to go in and possibly turn it round, that's not to say they will mind. -

Its tougher now for new managers with the transfer windows. Whoever comes now will admittedly have more time than they would have had the players not revolted as it seems they did, clearly that pushed the board into acting a month or so ahead of schedule. The problem is that from now till January (a lot of football) the new guy will have to firstly rebuild the relationship between players and coaching staff and also have a set of players who don't look up to it in truth. -

it isn't very often the bookies get it wrong when they slash someones price so short. he might do alright there, he seems to have a better temperament than di canio at least. -

I'm sure Poyet would get more out of them than Di Canio, but as Carl says, have that group of players got enough to give?
If not, it's a long time until January. And even then, with the amount of players signed recently, would loading the squad up with yet more new faces be particularly helpful?
Given a bit more time, some of the summer arrivals may settle and prove to be half decent. Could go either way though couldn't it? -

Given that the new man has to work with the players that are already there and they need a calming influence. Also with a fairly large contingent of italien based players they ought to try trappatoni to keep them up. Just an opinion. It won't happen.
