Police launch online form for you to dob in people who go out too much!
This lockdown seems to have brought out the absolute worst in humanity. It seems like all the Karen’s of the world finally have their soapbox and they’re damn well going to use it. I can’t even scroll through Facebook without at seeing at least 5 people bitching off random strangers for going out walking or driving their car with more than 2 passengers. Who made you the judge, jury and executioner, Karen?
Well, for those who love to snitch and bitch about their neighbours, their day just got a whole lot brighter. The police have just created an online form which will allow you to dob people in at the click of a button and I must say, it’s got a hint of Nazi Germany about it. Thankfully I’m not the only one who thinks that. Check out some of the comments: Proper sinister shit right there. While I get that people shouldn’t be buggering off to the park to meet their mates, I don’t think shopping them to the police is the way to go. Lawyer David Allan Green agrees: Quote:This is unpleasant form of policing and it is‘unwise to encourage neighbour to spy on neighbour, as it tears social fabric. If police are receiving too many calls, then they should be telling the callers not to waste police time.Convenience does not justify the externality of creating a fearful society, of neighbours snitching on neighbours. Boom. You tell’em David! I can already think of at least ten people who would use this system so we’re not off to a great start. Follow me on Twitter: @ReedeFox |

RE: Police launch online form for you to dob in people who go out too much!
I kind of agree with you Reede but not totally. We have to make sure that people follow the guidelines. I think this could actually be a good idea, it just needs a little tweaking here and there. For example that online report form should have some kind of criteria for using the report form in such cases as loitering for extended periods of time and in groups. I am sure that there are some kind of notices in parks to tell people to stay at home. I'd also go further and say that reporting people just for being in the park or outside talking to somebody should be a breach of using the report form because the informer would actually be wasting police time especially if they repeatedly report that kind of breach then that privilege should be temporarily taken away from the person not using the online report form correctly. The police can and should use their own discretion as to whether an online report is really worth investigating.
I say that I am not totally against the idea of the online report form because the number of people I see breaching the lockdown seems to be increasing and the seriousness of the lockdown doesn't really seem to have hit some people yet. In fact I'd go a step further and say that I am all in for ideas being put forward if it helps make sure that people keep to the lockdown measures put in place by the government e.g. perhaps more cctv cameras in those likely places where people will congregate for social or non essential reasons. Reede. Another thing, maybe if people are reported to the police in this way it may take away the need to fine them on the spot rather than if the police find people in breach of the lockdown guidelines without being reported. They might just get a written warning and sent on their way especially if it's the first time and a one off. |

RE: Police launch online form for you to dob in people who go out too much!
You put too much faith in the competency of the police. What prevents bad actors? What stops your neighbour from ratting on you anonymously due to some unknown grievance they may hold against you? More CCTV cameras, why not facial recognition while we're at it? Fuck it lets chip ourselves.
The police/government won't misuse their shiny new powers, all police are sincere and want the best for everyone, now hand over your liberties. |

I think encouraging people to be informants in a temporary situation will ultimately end up going well beyond lockdown which is really damaging as a society. I've already seen Facebook pages dedicated to finger pointing and it's really brought out the worst in people. It's quite sad to see. Follow me on Twitter: @ReedeFox |

This is so wrong. They aren't even offering a reward for the dobbing... What's the point?
