  You have to feel a bit sorry for Christiano Ronaldo, a pretty exceptional footballer in his own right, but Messi is another level again. Hard to compare accross generations though as the game has changed so much

  The scary thing about messi is: he's only 24! If we go by shat usually happens, then he will hit his peak at 26-27. Of course, a lot can happen between now and then. One other thing, would he be as good if he didn't have that midfield backing him? Who knows?
  And yes, not often I say this, but I do feel a little for C. Ronaldo. He's just an afterthought when we mention messi.

  this is always the main question that ever pops up in football who is or was better know one can really compare players like Pele, Maradona, George Best or even Messi all the names mentioned where special players don't forget over the years football has changed rules on tackling, lighter balls, better foot wear all these factors have to be taken into account and also the pitches nowadays to those 30-40 years ago. don't get me wrong Messi is a world class talent but can he cut it in other leagues that will be the time we can all sit back and say yes he is the best footballer in our era but there is no way we can compare him to the other top talents.

  it's very hard to compare players across different decades, different stages of evolution that football has gone through and other factors (lets not forget for example that Pele never played club football in Europe, his 1000+ goals are a lot easier to come by in a south american league with their style of football),
  
  but you can compare dominance. how dominant was a player compared to his peers at the time. the only question that comes up is for example was football stronger a few years ago with zidane, figo, ronaldo, rivaldo etc than it is now. i wonder that myself sometimes, because i am only just now old enough to have seen enough football of more than one or two generations of players with my own eyes over the course of many matches.... (as opposed to seeing a few replays of pele or cruyff etc)

  the guy is just incredible at what he has achieved especially at barcelona, i think what makes him so great is the work rate that he has and how deep he starts during an attack, without any out and out foward at barcelona at the moment the emphasis has been on messi's goal and 48 goals in 42/43 games has more than proved his quality

Counting his two goals against Mallorca, Messi has scored 76 goals in 2012, one more than the Brazilian did in 1958.
  64 for Barça, 12 for Argentina
  Of his 76 goals, 64 of them were scored for Barça and 12 were scored for Argentina. The Argentine has averaged 1.29 goals per match in his 59 matches this year (51 games for his Club, 8 for his country). Pelé, in 1958, scored 75 goals from 53 matches, averaging 1.41 goals per match. 66 of the Brazilian’s goals were scored for Santos and 9 were scored for the Brazilian national team.
  
  I'm not sure this qualifies him as the greatest ever footballer, but certainly the most prolific goalscorer..

  Can't get any better than this guy. Plus hes playing in harder competitions etc than what pele and maradona had to play in which makes it harder and messi even better

  There's no doubt Messi is an exeptional player (the best in the world currently), but he's also playing for an exceptional team in a comparitively weak league.
  
  For him to achieve the status of the true greats like Pele, Maradona and Zidane etc in my eyes he still has to perform in at least one World Cup finals. Having Maradona in charge can't have helped, but he was very disappointing last time around. He still has plenty of time though.

  The sun reported today that he will cost £312 MILLION to buy! I don't think anyone will even attempt to considering he would never leave Barca.
