As reported on the 11th of Novemeber...
Messi, at just 25 years old, has reached the heights only visited by football legends. This Sunday, at the Iberostar, the Argentine surpassed Pelé’s mark of goals scored in a calendar year. Counting his two goals against Mallorca, Messi has scored 76 goals in 2012, one more than the Brazilian did in 1958.
64 for Barça, 12 for Argentina
Of his 76 goals, 64 of them were scored for Barça and 12 were scored for Argentina. The Argentine has averaged 1.29 goals per match in his 59 matches this year (51 games for his Club, 8 for his country). Pelé, in 1958, scored 75 goals from 53 matches, averaging 1.41 goals per match. 66 of the Brazilian’s goals were scored for Santos and 9 were scored for the Brazilian national team.
I'm not sure this qualifies him as the greatest ever footballer, but certainly the most prolific goalscorer..
