  Okay, so here is the question. Do we like expanded media around our games? TV, books, comics. Or is it better contained within the game, so as to not alienate new fans and convelute the plot?

  Don`t know how i just noticed this thread, but nevermind i can still post on it.
  That depends really on how much effort goes into the expanded media they release around a game, if it`s rushed and ill thought out without properly making sure it fits or adds anything good then no i don`t like it, but when it`s well thought out and done well it can add interesting things to a games mythology that may not have been included otherwise.

  I agree wholeheartedly, I think the halo and mass effect expanded media are exceptional, then again there's a lot of games that get some shitty tie in book that involves characters we don't know in vaugely similar situations, bullshit. But I think it adds a lot in general.

  Certain games have excellent expanded media that give some good backstory to the series story, like the assassins creed short movies they released before the second one that fleshed out the story of ezio`s father which was good, i`m actually quite suprised they never tried anything similar with God of war.

  Yes, some games are suprisingly sparse on expanded media, but the other problem I suppose is that you can end up telling too many stories about the same or similar characters and end up over egging the pudding a bit so to speak. But I really like when they try.

  True, expanded media done wrong damages a character/game series, arkham city/asylum did it right, and when they try properly can have good results.
  Plus i think in the case of God of War they wanted to make a film out of it, which may have influenced their decision not to do any extra media for it, the film fell through though, probably for the best, was likely to be awful anyway,

  Sub question, has there ever been a genuinely good film based on a video game?! I fear not really, it may be for that reason that so many projects get stalled, like the halo movie or mass effect etc. If anyone needs inspiration on this topic...uwe ball.

  I don`t know i thought Hitman was a pretty good film although it could have been better, and i like the Resident Evil films but admittedly they aren`t all that much like the games anymore, there are a lot of genuinely awful game films though Uwe Boll is to blame for a lot of them.
  It`s a shame really because some games have great film potential just never works out.

  You really liked that Hitman movie? I can't agree on that one, thought it was a complete piece of garbage from start to finish. Never liked the Resi films, think I like the games too much, and it naturally wildly departs from those.

  Don`t get me wrong i`m not saying that Hitman was a classic or anything but it was entertaining enough and Timothy Olyphant i thought did a good job as Agent 47, although it is a flawed film.
  As i said before i like the Resi films, always enjoy watching them.
  I think the game film that had the most chance of being truly great was Bioshock because the director sounded like he really wanted to do it right, but then Universal got cheap and decided they wouldn`t give a big budget unless they toned it down for a lower rating.
