  the genius playmaker part of it i can't really see happening in the next, oh say.. 10 years at least, but regarding getting a clinical finisher it's easy - just bring alan shearer down from the commentary box, put him in a kit and he'll put 1-2 in the net before breaking a sweat lol

  I think it's a question of what would we prefer to see, England go down the route of finding a clinical finishing and basing our game around nicking one goal and being solid defensively or developing a style of play which will enhance our players abilities etc in the long term

  A bit of both wouldn't hurt!
  
  How about we look to develop a slick-passing, high-pressing, energetic style?
  
  If only there was a side with predominantly English players already doing it...
  
  That way you could just call them all up and they wouldn't need time to adjust. Barcelona/Spain, Ajax/Holland style.

  The premier league is the issue, or more correctly teams like Chelsea and Man City are the problem, I don't mean the high spending on foreign players in this case, it's the poaching of young talent from championship sides at ages 14 or 15 and then wasting their potential, as a Leeds fan I know all about this

  that'll take 10 years of work at least. can't just FIND a clinical striker tomorrow or even like a year from now, have to create / develop them at the youth level. same thing goes for everything else

  I don't think you can even develop a clinical finisher. It's more of a natural talent, of being in the right place at the right time, and having composure in front of goal. Unfortunately those sort of players seldom get a chance in the game these days as at youth level physical size, strength and speed are more important than sheer footballing ability. Lineker, Shearer, Fowler, Owen, Wright... We've had some good penalty box forwards in recent years, but seems to be a dying art. There's no one in the current England set up that I'd back to bury a half chance that falls to them in the box.

  I hope the plan is to develop more technical skills in our young players but I can't see how this is going to happen when the clubs control the academies etc.. the whole burton development is based on tall talk and little realistic plans

  Jermain Defoe probably comes closest out of the current crop. But you're right, they're a dying breed, and unfashionable too. No-one's exactly clamouring for him to be given a start are they?
