So that’s 3 defeats out of 3 and an early exit.
There seems to be a lot of talk about where the problems lie. That we have the lowest number of homegrown under-21 players out of all the major European leagues is undoubtedly a factor. But for me, that doesn’t really sit well with the ‘all our best youngsters are with the senior team’ excuse. Surely the fact the likes of Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, Phil Jones and Jack Rodwell have made the step up so early shows that if you’re good enough, you’re old enough, and you’ll get to the level you deserve.
I think it’s more likely an issue of youth coaching and that in general, our young players aren’t up to scratch. It might seem like it sometimes but the big clubs aren’t shelling out £20-30m on overseas players for the fun of it. If someone of an equal standard was coming through their youth team, they’d be using them instead. It's happening now, Luke Shaw at Southampton being a prime example, just not often enough. Maybe with the new academy systems in place we’ll see a better quality of homegrown player coming through in the next 5-10 years.
Or maybe the players just couldn’t be arsed and the manager is useless. That’s a possibility too.
