A statement has just been released from Leslie's agent, who asks that people respect the family's privacy during this time:

Quote:We formally announce the loss of Leslie Grantham, who passed away at 10.20am on the morning of Friday 15th June 2018.His ex-wife and sons have asked for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time, and for there to be no approaches to them for information or comment. They will not be making any statements to the media. They also ask that no photographs be taken of them in their grief. There will be a private funeral which will be attended by close family and friends only.

No one yet knows what he died from neighbours have said he looked 'frail and grey' in the run up to his death. As with any celeb, we've also been hearing from those fame hungry folk who met Leslie once for all of five minutes offering up their comments. One shop worker who used to sell Leslie cigarettes, said:

Quote:He used to buy cigarettes, Davidoff ones. He was not buying every day but very often. I saw him about three or four months ago. I think he's stopped smoking now.He was very friendly and talking nicely but he never said anything like 'I'm that guy and I'm famous'.

Well no love, why would he? He ain't about to be all 'do you know who I am' whilst he's buying a pack of cigs is he?! Dozy cow. RIP Leslie Grantham.

Taxi for Grantham!

Quote:On 3 December 1966, Grantham attempted to rob a taxi driver, Felix Reese, in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, West Germany. A struggle between Grantham and the driver followed, and Reese died from a gunshot wound to the head. In his statement to the police following his arrest, Grantham said that he did not know the gun was loaded and it had gone off during the struggle, which would have resulted in a conviction for manslaughter if a jury believed this version of events. However, at his trial in 1967 he was subsequently convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Although he had committed the murder in West Germany, he served the entirety of his imprisonment in various British prisons. This was because soldiers and officers convicted of any criminal offence that warrants a sentence of over two years are automatically transferred to Her Majesty's Prison Service, since they are also automatically dishonourably discharged.

Grantham was released in 1977, having served 10 years. While he was in Leyhill Prison in Gloucestershire, he acted in several plays for inmates and members of the public, and edited the prison newspaper. He was encouraged to get more involved in acting professionally by Labour Party politician T. Dan Smith, who had also been an inmate at Leyhill in the mid-1970s. He also met actress Louise Jameson during her visit to Leyhill in the mid-1970s; she had also encouraged him to take up acting and he became good friends with her.
