AUSTRALIA vs ENGLAND ODI & T20 Series 2014
RussyRover > 11/01/2014, 16:25
So the Ashes Tests have come and gone (quite literally), and it's time for a change to the limited overs formats.
Time for England to pull their proverbial fingers out and show what they can do, albeit with a very different looking line up.
Here's the schedule of games;
Jan 12 - 1st ODI, Melbourne (d/n) (03:20 GMT)
Jan 14 - v Prime Minister's XI, Canberra (d/n) (03:20 GMT)
Jan 17 - 2nd ODI, Brisbane (d/n) (03:20 GMT)
Jan 19 - 3rd ODI, Sydney (SCG) (d/n) (03:20 GMT)
Jan 24 - 4th ODI, Perth (d/n) (03:20 GMT)
Jan 26 - 5th ODI, Adelaide (d/n) (03:20 GMT)
Jan 29 - 1st T20 international, Hobart (d/n) (08:35 GMT)
Jan 31 - 2nd T20 international, Melbourne (d/n) (08:35 GMT)
Feb 02 -3rd T20 international, Sydney (Stadium Australia) (d/n) (08:35 GMT)
Stuart Broad is being rested for the first 2 ODI's before returning for the remainder and taking over as Capt for the T20's (a decision I still don't think is right, he's not English Capt material for me...).
Anderson has returned home, Finn still seems to have the jitters, so it will interesting to see the bowling attack come tomorrow.
Here's a 'probable' line up according to The Telegraph;
England (probable) *AN Cook, IR Bell, JE Root, EJG Morgan, RS Bopara, BA Stokes, JC Buttler, TT Bresnan, CJ Jordan, JC Tredwell, WB Rankin.
England's Fresh Start
For me, a bet of 4-1 (@9/4) or 5-0 (@11/2) series win to Australia...
If you can bear it, set your alarm for the early hours and see it unfold, or should that be unravel!!!

Got a feeling we might actually win this series, which would make the Ashes display even more infuriating. -

I hope you're right, if only for providing some entertainment factor. More dismal displays like in the Tests would just be too much. There's a lot of new faces, so no Ashes baggage to carry into these games.
I'm a bit torn whether England should have a better batting or bowling line up for these games, but it's the bowling that is the bigger worry, if we can't keep the Aussies in check, it may not matter what our lot can do.
One thing though is that they won't be facing Mitchell Johnson, so at least they can't use him as an excuse if they do lose miserably... -

First ODI Melbourne
England 269-7 - Australia 270-4 (45.4 overs) and win by 6 wickets.
Teams
Australia: David Warner, Aaron Finch, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke ©, George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell, Brad Haddin, James Faulkner, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Clint McKay, Xavier Doherty.
England: Alastair Cook ©, Ian Bell, Joe Root, Gary Ballance, Eoin Morgan, Ravi Bopara, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Tim Bresnan, Chris Jordan, Boyd Rankin.
So no specialist spinner for England and 2 bit part seamers in Stokes and Bopara to fill in with the other 3 seamers
England won the toss and elected to bat first, a reasonable decision considering the wicket.. If only Cook could last more than 4 balls??? At 4 for 1, it's not a good start...
After only scoring 3 from 23 balls, Root then goes in the 7th over, 22 for 2, this is sounding familiar...
10 overs down and it's an embarrassing 28 for 2 from the first Powerplay. I wonder what Ashley Giles is thinking now...
There were some positives from innings though, Gary Balance made 79, Eoin Morgan made 50, Bell made 41 and Jos Buttler who for some inexplicable reason came in at #8 was 34 not out at the end.
With this bowling line up, that certainly was not enough...
Australia show us how it's supposed to go, at the end of their first 10 over Powerplay, a respectable 64-0 is achieved.
Both openers, Finch and Warner get 50, before Warner tumbles for 65 at 163-1.
Watson's out for a Duck, but Clarke continues with Finch to almost make it a formality. Finch becomes the first Victorian to score a century at the MCG in ODI's...
A couple more token wickets fall, but it's all too easy for the Aussies.
Cook says afterwards they were 20 runs light!!! Yeah and the rest mate, and also a batter and a bowler light, as Root seems to be shot to hell, and Rankin didn't have a good day either.
Unless they make a change or 3 for the 2nd ODI, I can't see them getting much joy at the Gabba either. -

Jebus Christ, we won a game!
Naysayers might point to the fact that it was 'only' against a Prime Minister's XI but given our current form let's just be thankful our batting line-up didn't get mauled by Brett Lee, 37. In fact he only managed 2 wickets as England made 264-8 in an innings which saw Ballance and Buttler pass the half-century mark and Michael Carberry reach a confidence-boosting 47. Alastair Cook's still stinking the place out though. 2 balls, 1 run, see you later.
The XI were dispatched in 26 overs, 96 all out.
Emphatic!
Party time! -

That's it then, well on the way to a recovery!!! Let's hope they can bring some of that batting to the 2nd ODI and make it 2 from 2, though still not sure I would put any cash on them at the moment.
Perhaps even Cook can last more than an over this time? -

More bad news for England, well not so bad I guess as he hasn't done anything yet, but Steven Finn is sent home so he can find himself and his love of bowling
What's up with all these English players? Trott's going wibble in the corner with pencils stuffed up his nose, Swann chickens out when the opposition work out his bowling and now Finn can bowl no better than an eight year old girl in pigtails!!!!!
In just over 32 hours, they'll face their next test with the 2nd ODI in Brisbane, the Aussies are around 4/11 with England around 11/5, some value if you fancy England, but can't help thinking it will be money rolled in dog poop and flushed away.... But hey what do I know..... -

I think you're probably right on that one Russy, especially after comments like this from Jos Buttler:
"It's great to get a win. It's going to be a morale-boost for everyone, no matter who it is against.
"There were a lot of positives that came out of today. We got up to a challenging total and put them under pressure straight away with the ball. We had a lot of energy and we really tried to target early wickets and we got those.
"Everyone is pleased to get a win and hopefully we can take that momentum forward to Brisbane."
Yeah, but it was against a Prime Minister's XI FFS. It's almost as if they weren't expecting the victory... -

OK, we lost, but at least there are some positives to be had, and it's a long time since we've been able to say that.
England got through the full 50 overs and finished up 300-8, an innings which included a mighty impressive 99 ball 106 for Eoin Morgan. 68 for Bell, 49 for Buttler, even Alaistar Cook got 22!
Australia were then reduced to 244-9 and the first win of a rotten series was in sight, only for Faulkner to hit 69 off 47 balls (5 sixes in there) and wrap up the game with 3 balls to spare.
So close, but something to build on for Sunday providing they're not all too devastated.
