What gets me is that since the UK series, Australia went and had some decent matches in India, not that it seems it made their batting any better, but what did England do? They knew their batting is suspect and it seems they have done fuck all about it. It's just 'criminal' if they let the series slip away with the class players they undoubtedly have.
or maybe it's just the Gabba, it has always been friendly to the Aussies, so lets hope this blip is the kick in the arse England need... -

What annoys me is that the England camp don't just look at the Aussie line up section by section and compare it to ours and see we are on paper far superior in all sections.
Openers: Cook is genuine world class at test level, neither Rogers or Warner are.
3-6: Trott is exceptional at number 3 on his day, Watson has never proved it at test level beyond 50.
Clarke just shades it against KP at 4 as he is more consistent.
Smith couldn't wipe Bell's arse at number 5.
Root has proved himself at test level in number 6, Bailey hasn't proved that.
Number 7 is probably a shade to Haddin on Ashes form as Prior has struggled in the main,
So England have a clearly superior batting lineup but have batted like novices, letdowns -

Russy makes a good point about the Gabba, and if this does give them the kick up the arse they need then by rights the 2nd test should be a bit more of a contest.
Only 1 innings innit? A bloody shocking one yeah, but they've not all turned in to donkeys overnight. -

They batted like donkeys a number of times in England this summer and this 1st test hoodoo overseas is a factor in England's performance, as Scotty hopefully it will kick England's arse into performing in the next tests if this one is lost, which is probably will be -

An early wicket as Chris Rogers wafts a ball from Broad's first ball / over of the day and Carberry takes the catch at backward point with glee... So 67-1, can Watson make a better effort this innings? at least the barmy army has something to cheer about now, and quietened the Aussie hecklers...
and the answer is Watson cannot make a better effort as he's soon out for only 6 in the 30th over as he skys one, and an easy catch by Broad and Tremlett has his first wicket of the innings in his first over of the day, 75-2.
in comes the captain, what can he do??
Well, Clarke looks like he means business. England bring Broad back on to bowl at him, but he swats a couple of boundaries and he's going at about a run a ball...... Meanwhile Warner gets his half century as a rain shower starts up and at the end of the 33rd over and just before an hour's play is up the umpires decide to come off and let the shower pass... RAIN STOPS PLAY - Aus 94-2
I doubt it will last long, the forecast was for showers around on day 3 and 4 so it's all expected, and as I write this, they're going to re-start in about 5 minutes time...
DAY 3 LUNCH: Aus 145-2 and a lead of 304; Warner 83 & Clarke 34
After a promising start by England, the Aussie Captain and his opener have re-asserted themselves and look to be in control again. It could be a long ole day in the field for England unless they can find a spark of magic, or luck... -

The Aussies finally have enough once they've got the magic 400 Aus 401-7 dec, that leaves England needing 561 to take the victory
With about an hours play left in the day, England make their way out to the field and Carberry is out for 0, bowled by Harris albeit via the bat and a bounce between his legs... Great start this....
Just over 10 minutes later it's Trott's turn to walk back as he is unable to ward off the Mitchell Johnson attack, 10-2... it keeps getting better....
So Cook and KP at the crease, surely they can stay in till close of play?!? and they do, although not without some chances being given... what the hell are England doing, bring on the Keystone Cops, it couldn't get any worse...
DAY 3 CLOSE OF PLAY: ENG 24-2 537 more to go... Cook 11 & KP 3
The big question for Day 4 is whether England can make it to Day 5? and based on what I've seen so far, it'll be done and dusted by Tea... Well played the Aussies, or rather better played than the English team who turned up for this match with heads full of toys it seems... 'Nil Points' , 'Must Do Better' , 'Jones, see the headmaster for a damn good thrashing' all come to mind and much much more.... -

So England manage to survive the first hour and add 47 runs, but still a long long way to go...
Oops, the curse of the break strikes again as straight afterwards KP goes and gets himself out for 26 as a Johnson short ball tempts him into a hook shot and it's straight down the throat of the sub at deep backward square leg, 72-3
In comes Bell... can he stay with his Captain to make a few, a brace of centuries would be nice, although highly unlikely... -

England 2nd Innings179 all out from 81.1 overs and 1-0 to the Aussies who win by 381 runs...
What can you say, at least they made it past tea time!!!! It's Australia's first win in 10 Tests, and you have to say they deserved it.
Mitchell Johnson who's doing his mini Merv impression with his facial growth takes the Man of the Match award, if he plays like this in the other matches, England will have a right handful...
I'm phoning the local club this afternoon to see if they have any 11 year olds who want a trip to Australia, at least they'll put up a better fight compared to what I've been witnessing.... -

I think we have been jumped by the Aussies and you have to say that the way that they prepared and planned against us, as well as the captaincy of Michael Clarke, was superb. The Aussies haven't lost at the Gabba in 25 years and you can see why, it is a pitch that suits their cricket as it encourages aggression and in-your-face bowling, which has never been a strength of ours. The main concern for the whole series is that if we cannot get near them in Brisbane then we have sod all chance in Perth, where it is probably going to be even quicker. However, we turned them over in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney before so I think it is too early to write the obituary of this series just yet.
Player-by-player:
Carberry - Encouraging, calm and composed in the first innings and then probably fell to the tactics employed, I doubt he has had many left arm quickies bowling short around the wicket to him on a quick pitch before.
Cook - The Jekyll and Hyde nature of his England career was out in this game, his early years uncertainties outside off stump appeared in the first innings and Harris got him. In the second innings it was Cook of three years ago as he dug in and looked solid.
Trott - He looks shot, they know his weakness and they played on it! The most worrying aspect is that it doesn't look like he has done any work on it since they worked him out at Lord's
KP - It was KP being KP, he is a great batsman and that cannot be denied but he seems to carry on playing in the same fashion no matter what the match situation is. They played on his patience and waited for him to snap, both times he did.
Bell - The only England batsman who can say it took two decent balls to get him out, not to blame!
Root - Needs to become more consistent, thankfully he has been relieved of the opening job and I think we will learn more about his future prospects plus how he needs to develop from this series.
Prior - He must realise that he cannot live off his match saving innings in New Zealand, he is in woeful form and Bairstow can't be far off a call up.
Broad - Played with pride and shut the critics up with his bowling and he stood firm in the first innings batting madness, England's man of the match by a country mile!
Swann - Not his type of surface but it was worrying that Lyon out-performed him, wouldn't write him off yet and he was brilliant in Adelaide three years ago but it wasn't a drop-in pitch then so will see how that goes.
Tremlett - Good and honest but has lost the nip of pace that made him a threat, decent figures in the second innings but Finn must be considered for Adelaide.
Anderson - I won't blame Jimmy for tailing off in the second innings after a typically tight performance in the first, after all he only had four hours rest in between two huge efforts in 30-plus degree heat and that is not his fault at all! -

That they outplayed us is certainly not in question, and you're right about England's preparations, or lack of it seems....

which is apparently 'long standing' !!! WTF - haven't they learned anything since Marcus Trescothick... It's a shame for Trott, I hope he gets his head in order with a break away from the game, but what is he and the England management team who must have been up to speed on his condition thinking.. oh let's try him out and see if he can cope in the hotpot in Australia!!!
Sorry but that is extremely poor management skills, and to me sums up why they lost this first test so convincingly.. Bad show boys (shaking head and tutting lots...)
