  The tournament has been frustrating to watch for me due to the constant rules changes that even I didn't know about. The Goalie rule, the new handball rule and just generally the officials and VAR making it one of most unenjoyable tournaments I've watched sadly. Sticking with my prediction of Netherlands v France/US, but after last nights game with Netherlands and Japan, i think VAR will be the telling factor in the final.

  what is the change for handball?  i'm not a huge soccer fan, so am not up with the rules. goalies staying on the line seems fair to me, thought that was always the case. piss the var off. trust the umpires. nobody's perfect, we're all experts after seeing 10 replays-slow motion-freeze frame-zooming in-different angles...…..

  Was always a case of deliberate handball was a penalty and if it hit the arm otherwise it was no penalty. The NEW RULE is if it strays from a 'natural silhouette' and hits the arm it's a penalty, even if you get the ball blasted at you and have no chance to get in a natural silhouette! The goalie rule is dumb, if a player changes angle when he shoots the goalie won't be able to adjust. Should be on the line but allowed to come off it just before contact and move as far forward as 2 feet. As penalties will become automatic goals unless they miss target or hit it at the keeper. 
  
  I've watched more German league than my own league in England and the fans in the Bundesliga hate VAR as much as everyone. The worry is the rules change all the time and so no one at this world cup knows the new rules as not been briefed, plus everyone will constantly ask for it to be reviewed on every goal. The only decent bit of technology so far that has been 100% is goal-line technology as if it fully crosses the line the ref gets a buzz and there is no argument.
  
  Cricket and Rugby use technology and rarely get it wrong too much.

  thanks for explaining that. 'natural silhouette', never heard that before. sounds cvery unfair. the way you described goalies and penalties too, the rule is extremely unfair. are they trying to increase number of goals scored in the belief it will make it more exciting? weren't there only 2 rule changes in 50 or 100 years?  goalies could only take 4 steps with the ball?  back passes to keeper who could handle ball?

  Goalie off their line has been around for a few years, but now it is can't come off till after the kick is taken which is B.S! Other rules like if you talk back or show descent the ref moves the ball 10yard as they stole it from Rugby, but has been forgotten. Another was no clutching, grabbing or holding in the area or it is an instant penalty or foul, though that lasted 1 weekend. The 6 SECOND rule - where a goalie if she gathers it or catches it then has 6 seconds to play the ball or a foul is given from the spot she is stood on.

  England were stiff to have a goal disallowed, offside by a bees dick, but they had another chance with a penalty, poorgirl blew it though, probably through nerves.  that offside review-- ridiculous.
