So David Moyes has finally been put out of his misery, with Ryan Giggs taking over on an interim basis until the end of the season. Who'll get the job permanently? These are the bookies' favourites...
Louis Van Gaal 2/1
He's won it all (unlike Moyes, who'd won nothing) and would certainly get the respect of the players (unlike Moyes...). Available too, or at least he will be after the World Cup, and for all the issues this season the United job is still a far more attractive proposition than the Spurs one. He's 62, so it'd be a relatively short-term fix, but maybe playing the long game and 'standing against the immediacy of modern life' isn't all it's cracked up to be anyway.
Jurgen Klopp 6/1
Quite the jump in odds from van Gaal, but that's got more to do with his contract situation (he only signed a new deal at Dortmund 6 months ago) than his suitability for the job. In fact if anything he's probably more suited, given that as well as having the reputation he's also only 46. Plenty of time to build a legacy then, and on a budget if he has to, which would surely be music to the Glazers and their interest payments' ears.
Ryan Giggs 6/1
One for the sentimentalists, but if Moyes was inexperienced then what does that make Giggs? Improved results between now and the end of the season might make it seem like a good idea, but it really is too soon for him.
Sir Alex Ferguson 16/1
He wouldn't, would he?
Diego Simeone 16/1
Remember how Alex Ferguson won the league last year with a rag-tag bunch of has-beens and never-weres? Well Simeone's on course for a pretty ridiculous La Liga and Champions League double with Atletico Madrid. Suck it. Would probably terrify Wayne Rooney to the point of actually putting a shift in too.
Shout-outs to Roberto Martinez (haha) at 20/1 and Frank De Boer at 25/1 too.
