I chose Avast software by doing exactly what you said Tony. However, Mark is also spot on with his deep suspicion of anything that is free. WHY should always be your next question. How do they make their money and where do I fit in need to be understood first.
In the case of my software, it repeatedly points out flaws in my system and suggest I fix it. If I follow its suggestion I get asked to upgrade to a paid version. Obviously many people do this which makes their free offering worthwhile for them. That answers why they do it. However, I always choose not to upgrade although I may be tempted one day. It is dangerous to use the web at all these days without at least some sort of anti-virus software protecting you, so a free one is worth having rather than none at all.
Search for Avast in Google and go to the official Avast website where you should see options for a free download as well as some of the additional features that are not free. Others may be just as good or even better but that is what I use and have not had a virus since I started using it.
