TRANSFER NEWS & GOSSIP: Sunday 4th August

I don’t know if it’s because they have a whole week to make things up, away from the huff and puff of the daily rumour grind, but the Sunday papers certainly go a lot deeper with their nonsense. The People are enthralling us with talk of payment plans and instalments today. Apparently Real Madrid only want to pay £20m upfront for Gareth Bale with rest spread out in some way or other. The Mail reckon Spurs owner Joe Lewis, none of your Daniel Levys for them, wants £100m but the Telegraph are saying that the club will refuse to even meet Real for talks. So there we are, still no closer to an idea of what will happen, but valuable insights nonetheless…
On to the inevitable speculation of who Tottenham will spend all that lovely money on now, Porto’s Jackson Martinez and racism’s Luis Suarez.
Speaking of ol’ Vampire-chops, The Sun reckon Arsene Wenger has told Close Friend (you know the one, knocks about with A Source Close To) “I’ll get Luis Suarez”. They’re The Sun’s quotation marks by the way, not mine. Consider it nailed-on.
Or not. Brendan Rodgers has said he’s not for sale, but if he was, the price would be closer to the £100m being talked about for Gareth Bale. £60m ought to do it, providing the standing ovation given to him at Steven Gerrard’s testimonial hasn’t brought about a change of heart. You’ll Never Walk Alone, Luis. Unless you leave of course, you bastard.
Wayne Rooney will submit a transfer request this week. How many is that now? Chelsea, £40m, imminent, blah, blah.
Gerardo Martino, the new Barcelona manager, has said that Cesc Fabregas will decide himself whether or not to move to Man Utd. This is being talked up as a ‘boost’ for United’s chances of signing the Spain midfielder, despite him never as so much mentioning that he wants to leave Barca. If he doesn’t end up at Old Trafford, David Moyes will move for Bastian Schweinsteiger, and most likely not get him either.
Last, and by every means least, Marouane Chamakh has signed a six-month loan deal at Crystal Palace. Presumably the Eagles didn’t want to commit to a full year, can’t think why, mind…
