You know how the pitches can get at lower league grounds over the winter months. And Rochdale have got it worse than most. Football on a Saturday, and then Rugby League side Rochdale Hornets play on Sundays.

So imagine their joy when Greater Manchester Police donated some heat lamps seized from raids on cannabis growing operations. Here they are in action.

Groundsman Oli Makin reckons they'd have cost somewhere between £20,000 and £30,000 to buy legit and will make a "massive difference" to the turf.

"It gets a lot of wear and tear in winter because there are football matches on Saturdays and rugby on Sundays. I can't thank police enough.

"It has saved the club a fortune and the players will be happy, especially the goalkeeper."

What a heart-warming story, and it'll be even better once away fans cotton on and start throwing hemp seeds on to the pitch.

Who says crime doesn't pay? This brings a whole new meaning to the 'dizzy heights' that can be reached in football and I expect Rochdale to fly around the pitch. The half time cakes might be worth trying as well!
