It's amazing, and easily amongst the best Batman films ever made.
A lot of credit has to go to Matt Reeves' directing and co-writing with Craig. Pattinson, Kravitz, Wright, Dano, Farrell, Tutturo and Serkis' acting are all stellar. But a special thanks needs to be given to Giacchino's score, Fraser cinematography, Chinlund's production design, the art direction team, the makeup team, the costume design team, the sound design team, the stunt team and everyone that worked behind the scenes.
My first memories of Batman was the Adam West TV show, Bruce Timm's animated TV show and the Burton films. So my love for the character varies from camp to gothic. The Lego Batman film is underrated too. Even the Schumacher films have a slight soft spot in my heart due to Carrey as the Riddler and Thurman as Poison Ivy. But I think most people would say that the Nolan films are the pinnacle, and I would agree, Leger's performance is that legendary, and truly worthy of his posthumous Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
The thing that I loved most about Reeves' Batman is that he approached it from the angle of a detective story, in the vein of the Long Halloween and Hush comic books. Which is something that we've yet to see in a live-action film, and it works beautifully. This might be the most "living and breathing" version of Gotham that we've ever seen on the big screen. The use of real locations like the Liver Building and St George's Hall, gives it a real tangibility.
There are a couple of hints as to where they can take the story in a sequel, in terms of characters and locations. So it'll be interesting to see how Reeves uses that potential in the Penguin show and the Gordon show on HBO Max. I'd love to see him introduce more Batman associated heroes and villains. The Court of Owls comic book would be the perfect story to adapt into the sequel.
