RE: Snooker

The final of the NI Open was looking pretty boring and one-sided during the afternoon session.
Barry Hawkins zoomed off to a 5-1 lead over the 42 year-old Mark King (whatever happened to the new generation?)
Then thankfully, King pulled a couple back to leave it 5-3 while they went for their tea (gravy chip and a battered sausage probably)
Returning for the decisive evening session, King was on a serious roll (still on an energy high after his feed of chips) and slated up 4 on the trot to make it 5-7, the tables are now turned.
Then at 7-8, with Hawkins ahead and just a formality needed to put it level, King put his stubborn head on and ground out a half hour of trying to get a snooker, with just 3 balls on the table. Sounds boring but it was enthralling stuff, and miraculously he forced a re-spotted black which he then failed to pot, so it was a decider after all.
No big breaks, to and fro, but Mark King winning in the end, amazingly his first ranking tournament trophy in 25 years of being a professional player. Emotional scenes and the inaugural awarding of the brand-new Alex Higgins Trophy.
Well done to him, and also Belfast for getting on the snooker map again.
