Silence

Managed to procure and watch the new Martin Scorsese film, the award nominated 'Silence' and gave it a watch with the fam yesterday. Whilst the subject matter, not really my cup of tea, gien the largely positive reviews, thought we'd give it a look see..and im kind of glad we did. The film, starring Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver and Liam Neeson tells the story of two Christian missionaries who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor at a time when Christianity was outlawed and their presence..well, as you will see, not exactly welcomed.
We did watch the film from start to finish and, whilst we enjoed the film in some respects, one pitfall and what will prevent a second watch is the plodding pace of the film and the run time. Combined, these 2 factors meant that we were really aware of the length of the film so whilst we continued to watch, we did get fidgety..and thats not so good. Great performances by the leads up to the last 15 or so minutes of the film when any and all build just seems to fall away which leaves a 'oh, was that it' feeling to the tail end of the film. Granted there are a couple of torture scenes, and whilst they are not particually nice, they are hardly that horrific as is being put forward by some reviewers (or perhaps its all the horror movies i have watched over the years have de-sensitized me to such things haha). Would recommend checking this out on home release as, despite the great performances (even by Lam who happens to only be in the film for, id say, 20 odd minutes), but you may find yourself struggling to say awake in the cinema. Compared to Scorsese's classics though, for me, this doesnt come close.
