IFFHS have released their updated rankings for the best club teams in the world, and it sees Tottenham Hotspur rise to 7th. Last season’s run in the Europa Cup and 5th place Premier League finish has been key in the club making the top ten and puts them above local rivals Arsenal.
The statistics released by IFFHS are made up via a points system in which clubs pick up points for wins or draws in their domestic and continental competitions. The number of points available is judged on how competitive the competitions are that each club has to play in. The Premier League is ranked as one of the top leagues and therefore Tottenham were able to gain the maximum points for a win or a draw.
Tottenham’s run in last season’s Europa League also had a major bearing on their ranking. They reached the quarter final stage before being eliminated by Basel but with the competition being seen as a major tournament the North London club picked up valuable points. Tottenham have also progressed to the knock out stages in this year’s campaign and they currently lie 5th in the Premier League which has helped them to add to their tally.
In total Tottenham picked up 240,000 points just four points off 6th placed PSG and closely followed by Basel in 8th place. Notable clubs that Tottenham were ranked above include both the Manchester clubs, Italian champions Juventus and local rivals Arsenal. Arsenal failed to make it into the top ten after finishing 12th in the list on 218,000 points. The top three included Champions League winners Bayern Munich in first place with 370,000 points, followed by Real Madrid in second and Chelsea in third.
The IFFHS boffins insist their system is fair but it usually leaves fans scratching theirs heads.
Im a spurs fan and believe this is ridiculous, yeah we won more games than arsenal last year but we're not better than them at all,
league shows that, but we did perform better overall than them, but they do have the better team and the better performances which edges it.
