He was already due to leave the club at the end of the season but his exit was hastened by events during last night's win 1-0 over Barnsley.

After his decision to take off young defender Barry Cotter (who incidentally looks quite a lot like Neymar) early in the second half was met with a chorus of boos, McCarthy decided enough was enough and turned in his badge and gun at the post-match press conference.

“It was a disgraceful reaction, that but it’s the last time I’ll have to hear it because that’s my last game. I’m out of here.”

And with that he was gone.

I can't find a video of the exact incident unfortunately but this interview with the club's online TV channel shortly afterwards covers a lot of the main themes.
