Got around to checking out the first animated film from 'Studio Ponoc' (formed of former Studio Ghibli talent) titled 'Mary and the Witch's Flower' the other day. Has anyone else seen thi yet? what did you think? Granted, comparing itself to the works by the legendary 'Studio Ghibli' was gona raise more than a few eyebrows. Have gotta say though, as 1st movies go, this is actually a pretty darn solid opener. The film (without giving too much away) tells of Mary, who by one means or anothr happens upon a legendary flower that grants her witch's powers and deals with those that will stop at nothing to get their hands on the flowers for their own questionable needs. The level of imagination displayed here is on par with some of Ghibli's finest..the film both manages to be gorgeous to look at and be just as batshit weird as we have come to expect. The charaters are pretty interesting and on the whole it's an enjoyable watch. The only relal critiscism comes down to the films pacing. When it picks up, its fine but at other times the story really does lag and does run the risk of boring the audience. This said, while this may not convert non believers, fans of the genre and Ghibli's work should get a kick outta this one.
