  Question for those in the know or have used it, how reliable is the free Linux operating system?
  I ask because I have an old hard drive from the PS3 (it got full and had to be replaced) but if the Linux operating system was any good I'd be able to overwrite it and get my laptop limping along again to replace the knackered hard drive.
  I'm hoping someone on here will have used it, bit of a shot in the dark but worth asking.
  If this is in the wrong section that was purely a mistake.

  Linux isn't half bad - probably best going with Ubuntu - fairly user friendly

  Linux is good, very good. There are many flavours to choose from, I use Oracle Linux which is excellent as my file and database server. I have also used Debian. Both come with a GUI, a Windows like desktop, so that you can use applications in the same way as you are used to.
  
  I have a couple of applications that are Windows only, otherwise I would have swapped over to Linux for everything.

  Thanks for the responses it's good to know, I'm not sure it will actually work but helpful to know that if I can get the old ps3 hard drive to work in the laptop at all it should at least have a decent operating system (that I don't have to pay for),To be honest I have my doubts it will but may as well have the last ditch attempt at it.
