  Last year Warner Bros. and DC revealed that they were creating a Joker origin-story that would have nothing to do be Jared Leto's portrayal of the character. Obviously this made me and many other people pretty happy because Jared Leto's Joker was fucking horrendous. However, the studio can't seem to make up their mind and have decided to develop another standalone Joker film which will star Jared Leto.
  
   
  
  According to sources, Leto is set to star and produce an the standalone film, which could also pave the way for future movies branching from Suicide Squad. There aren't any plot details yet but the studio's idea is to expand on the world created by Suicide Squad and tie into future instalments.
  
  
  
  In Suicide Squad, The Joker appeared to die in a helicopter crash so your guess is as good as mine as to what direction the movie decides to go in. It could either be a backstory as to how the character wound up in Belle Reve Prison (which I would personally love) or it could be that he didn't die in that helicopter crash and we'll be seeing what happens to him while the Squad was battling the Enchantress. Who really knows at this point. I'm sure more details will emerge in the coming months.

  Not much of a spoiler alert this late in the game, but in the end credit scene.   The Joker breaks into the prison to rescue Harley.
  
  I do agree with the fucking awful Joker sentiments.  Cesar Romero must have been rolling in his grave at that portrayal.

  I would love to know what goes into the planning schedule of DC films, seems they just blindly throw darts at a wall of pictures and whatever they land on they start development of. Only way to explain why they need two films for the same character, including an origin film for a character that has no need for a definitive origin.
  I do think they could salvage Leto's Joker though, maybe tone down some of the very weird touches he added, and possibly pretend he never had those tattoos.

  Gotta say, while he was far from a perfect joker and certainly didn't hold a torch to Nicholson of Ledgers..i didn't dislike him. There were glimmers of promise and had he been given more screen time (or made the 1st films villian as opposed to that god awful enchantress). He was far better at the more nuanced scenes he appeared in (such as the diving into the vat scene). Hopefully this will give his take on the character chance to shine. What has got me more intruiged though is the other 'Joker' movie that is scheduled to become a reality..you know, the one with Joaquin Phoeniix scheduled to play him. Small budget by comparison, gonna be under the 'dc : dark' banner and there are rumours that it will be set in the 1980's..love the sound of that so far.

  Talking again about Joaquin Phoenix's Joker origin movie, by all apperances it does appear that the film may leapfrog Leto's offering as its scheduled to start shooting in New York as early as this september.  Theres a fair bit of buzz about this one, some predicting that this version will become just as iconic as Ledger's . Its no secret how choosy Joaquin is about his roles so for him to be so psyched about doing this, am expectin something pretty special.

  I just think it’s pointless to have a stand-alone Joker film when they have a supposedly connected film universe going, will only confuse things. Plus i’m against giving Joker a definitive origin anyway, The Killing Joke graphic novel (which is brilliant) offered a possibility but I think it’s better left as a mystery.

  Before, i may have agreed, Jesslloydfan (say, such as during the Dark Knight years etc..). Given the state that the DC movie universe seeems to be in though at the moment (only a stones throw away from chaos even though it need not be), think the time is right for some experimental projects. Do like the idea of a much lower budget, much grittier/darker intimate character study showing the Jokers emergence as a result of a washed up comedian loosing his mind. In these days of over the top flash and bang when it comes to DC and Marvel especially, getting down in the dirt with one of these films maybe just what the doctor ordered.
