Isolation has proved finally that sex work is real work!

If being on lockdown has proved anything, it’s that people need sex workers! Some might even say it’s essential. Those cam gals are the the only people getting us through this shit right now (as well as Joe Exotic) and yet most people still don’t think that sex work is real work. 
 
While some of us have been trying to keep ourselves entertained with some light exercise, TV shows and gorging on food like it’s motherflippin Christmas, others have turned to wanking to get through this.



Porn sites and individual webcam models have noticed a huge in influx of traffic since the UK went into lockdown. Due to social distancing, people are feeling starved of affection and human interaction so the next best thing is to hit up your favourite cam girl. However, people are still struggling to see sex work as legitimate work.


 
I caught up with Nene from Rampant TV, who told me she’s been busier than ever since quarantine. She also said that while many of her callers are respectful, others are just giant assholes who ‘lack the understanding of what really goes into sex work.’ Here’s what Nene had to say: 
 

I’m providing a service and I’m being paid for my time and skills, which isn’t any different from any other kind of self-employed job. There’s so much that goes into what I do. It’s not just about jumping on camera in a sexy outfit. I do my own marketing and my own accounting. It’s a full-time job! 

 
As a former cam girl myself, I concur with Nene. I had some great nights on cam speaking to awesome guys but other days were full of complete assholes barking orders without so much as a ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ Here's an old pic of me getting ready for cam for good measure, circa 2013.

 

If this global pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we’re all reliant on workers that we as a nation previously considered unworthy. If we can change our mindset about delivery drivers and supermarket staff, maybe we can do the same about sex workers.
