World Cup play-off tips, with a bit of England v Germany thrown in...
Romania v Greece 19:00
The Greeks take a healthy looking 3-1 lead in to the second leg here and are an emphatic 1/5 to qualify for Brazil, versus Romania way out at 10/3. Leaving that first leg to one side and looking further back in to the qualifying campaign, Greece amassed an impressive 25 points from 10 games (just missing the automatic spot on goal difference) while Romania managed just 19. I’m going for a draw tonight, and I quite like the look of 1-1 with Konstantinis Mitroglou to score first at 33/1.
Prediction 1-1 (11/2)
Croatia v Iceland 19:15
A creditable 0-0 for Iceland in Reykjavic but with home advantage I’d be surprised if Croatia didn’t have enough to see them off tonight. Both teams got 17 points in qualifying, though Croatia probably had the tougher group, and they’re understandably 1/3 favourites for the win this evening. Hard to see much value there but BTTS and Croatia to win looks decent at 10/3.
Prediction: 2-1 (8/1)
Sweden v Portugal 19:45
Evenly poised this one, with Portugal sneaking a 1-0 in the home leg. Both sides are 17/10 for the win tonight, I’d go with Portugal if I had to pick but Sweden to qualify at 3/1 looks tempting as well. Looking at it in terms of Ibrahimovic v Ronaldo; Zlatan’s 5/1 to score first and Cristiano’s 9/2. A quid on each wouldn’t be a terrible idea.
Prediction: 1-2 (8/1)
France v Ukraine 20:00
The French are 2/5 to win, while Ukraine are the same price to qualify. That’s how I see it going but after an awful 2-0 defeat in Kiev on Friday night, I’m surprised France are that short to be honest. The Ukraine win is 15/2. Can’t see it happening, but if Les Bleus decide they don’t fancy it again that might be decent value. 12/5 on 3.5+ goals might be worth a go too. The French are going to have to chase it, which could well leave them exposed at the back.
Prediction: 3-1 (14/1)
England v Germany 20:00
Look at that, England at home, 19/10 outsiders, while the Germans are as short as 6/4. We must be on for a hiding… If you can’t bring yourself to back the away side, how about an England and draw double chance at 1.54? Rooney’s 11/5 to score at any time, 8/1 to score first but I’ll go with the former I think, a consolation goal might be the best we can hope for. 7/4 on 3.5+ match goals is a nice non-committal way of saying we’re going to get dicked.
Prediction: 1-3 (18/1)
ACCUMULATOR: £5 on wins for Croatia, Portugal, France and Germany could return £63.
