Over the past year I’ve seen pretty much every Instagram influencer, cosplayer and pornstar doing a specific facial expression and although it’s pretty hot, it’s bizarre as fuck. I’m talking about that face the crossed eyes, rolled back, with a tongue. You know the one. Belle Delphine seemed to be the first mainstream model to adopt it and since then it’s blown up all over Pornhub.

After some research I came to discover that this facial expression actually has a name - Ahegao! It hails from Japan and has been huge in hentai since the 90s. In the old hentai comics, ahegao was used to describe the facial expressions of characters as they orgasmed and it perfectly depicted the euphoric state of arousal.

The word ‘Ahegao’ comes directly from the words “ahe”, and “kao” - with “ahe” meaning woman’s moans of pleasure and excitement while “kao” is the Japanese word for face. Makes sense. A sex therapist reckons we’re all obsessed with Ahegao because it implies a loss of control but you’ll have to ask the Ahegao fans about that one. I’m sure people have their own reasons for finding it arousing.

Ahegao or Aegyo is trending on TikTok again, with this Korean Tiktoker explaining that some Korean women like to use it as a way of getting what they want from their partner.

Aegyo in Korean is an expression of affection that an include a high pitch voice and a change in facial expressions. It's usually used as a flirty way to get what you want but I'm not going to lie, it makes me fairly weirded out. Belle Delphine kicked of the trend in the UK with her famous tongue-out, crossed eyed pic that catapulted her to stardom.
