  As far as this years big awards contenders go THIS IS BLEEDIN WELL MORE LIKE IT. Saw 'Hacksaw Ridge' available and decided it would be rude not to . Watched the film with my family a few days ago..how to sum it up in the initial other than to say that this film is absolutely fantastic. Directed by Mel Gibson (so you know after Braveheart and Passion of the Christ, this aint gonna pull any punches) the film tells the true story of WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, who served during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people and becomes the first Conscientious Objector in American history to be awarded the Medal of Honor. I cannot recomend this film enough, the performances, the story, the battle sequences..this is a real tour de force of a film that, once again, during the battle scenes is not afraid to put us, the viewers, right in the thick of things. No expense spared in showing us the grisly details. Chuck into the mix a love story as well and your left with, for me, the first of the award contenders so far this season that for me, actuallly deserves to sweep the board. Saying that im not sure how many catagories its nominated in but, in anyy event, it deserves to do really well. Cannot recommend this enough and massive praise to Mel Gibson. In front of the camera, in my opinion, he hasnt put in a decent performance since ' Expendables 3'. Behind it however, he really does know his stuff.

  Watch this last night, the other half wasnt too keen when I told her what it was, but certainly changed her mind, one of the best films I've seen so far in 2017, wasn't fully sure what to expect but Defoe worth a watch

  Glad you enjoyed ' Hacksaw Ridge' as well, markgray27 (and your other half as well of course. To be honest i hhad not even bothered checking out the trailer for this prior to seeing it so went in completely blind..and enjoyed all the more for it as the trailers for this, by all appearances, are pretty spoiler heavy. Mel, Garfield, the film, The impossibly fit female lead in the film..just give them the statuette's now and save the waiting later. That said, bet Mel wont even get nominated as hollywood does seem to have fallen out of grace with the guy (despite how bleedin talented he is).

  Have to agree fully with you on this, now I have seen the trailer can say it would have spoiled the film completely, well worth a watch if any gets chance to see it

  this movie looks like it will have a really good story line from what i saw, and also im into war movies, cant wait to see this but shame its not coming out till november

  yeah. well mel gibson makes some good films no doubt about it. 'when we were soldiers' and the much underated 'gringo' ( which was titled ' what i did last summer' over here just so whenever i meet anyone at a party and discuss it people get it confused with the i know what you did last summer series . poor marketing idea. anyway i like mel but do we really need another war film? especieally when my christopher nolan ( who i feel understands film better than anyone ) is bringing out his version of Dunkirk this year. anyone care to persuade me why i should see the gibson film too.

  what can i say that i have not alredy said, st john my friend. II can kinda understand where you are coming from. See too many war films in a relatively short space of time and suppose theres a danger of them all just blending into one. Nolan's movie im assuming is gonna focus on a group as opposed to Mel's Hacksaw that, while featuring many other characters, this is essentially chronicling the actions of one man. Also Mel's manages to weave in a very watchable love story into the mix...one which would not have worked if it wasnt for Garfield and his love interest acting thheir chops off. Mel's also, while there area couple of large scale set pieces, a lot of the action sequences / vioklence is quit tight on if you know what i mean (and subsequently isnt afraid to show you close ups of people being set on fire, losing body parts and the such like). Much like his previous directorial efforts, its a pretty damn visceral film at times whereas im guessing Nolans will focus more on the big, frantic (be they gorgeous) set pieces / battles.
