Francesco ‘Dodo’ Molinari’s (40/1 2pts E/W) record around the Earth Course makes him an appealing selection for me this week. In sixteen rounds here, he has shot under par in 13 of them posting two top ten finishes in the process. He arrives in Dubai winless for the season but in good form, he has posted top twenty five finishes in his last five events, included a tied second finish in Shanghai three starts back. Add to that top ten finishes at Muirfield and Wentworth, just to illustrate his ability in big events. He rates as a big contender this week after threatening to win on a number of occasions this year.
Next up, Thongchai Jaidee (66/1 1.5pts E/W) who like Molinari hasn’t won this season but has looked close to winning on a number of occasions. He has finished inside the top ten in his past two appearances at the Earth Course shooting in the 60’s in seven of the eight rounds. His form has strange of late, he finished tied ninth in Crans before disappointing at the Dunhill Links and Portugal Masters only to finish tied second in Shanghai. He has plodded through his last two events but he has an outside chance of winning the Race To Dubai so that will provide more motivation for this week, a hot putter will see him contend this week.
Finally, the sole winner from this season amongst my trio, Chris Wood (80/1 - 1.5pts E/W), who broke through in the desert earlier this year. He doesn’t have the flashiest of form on the Earth Course but he did shoot under par in all four rounds last year and he is a much improved player this year now he has picked up his maiden win. In terms of current form, it’s been encouraging after a couple of mid-season injury break, he has posted top ten finishes at Firestone and at the Dunhill Links as well as a tied fifteenth last week. He has the length to take advantage of the Earth Course’s par-5’and I just sense a big performance is brewing for him this week.
