A dude who accidentally chopped off his thumb in a woodwork accident has received a bizarre replacement - his toe.
Aiden Adkins was tinkering around in his garage when he saw a piece of wood chip fly and ping across the room. However, upon closer inspection, it turned out to be his thumb. Yikes! Aiden was rushed to the hospital, where doctors said that they had just four hours to reattach his thumb but family members were unable to find it in the garage so they were forced to see up the wound, leaving Aiden with a stump.
After a while of living with a stumpy hand, doctors gave Aiden an ultimatum - to live without a thumb, or have one of his toes sewn on instead. It took Aiden a few months to decide but eventually he came to the conclusion that he’d rather have a weird toe-thumb (thoe?) than no thumb at all.
Here’s what Aiden had to say after having the op:
Quote:I can finally give a thumbs up again!! Doctors are loving how it looks!!
Apparently Aiden is pretty lucky to have such great movement in his thoe, as many people aren’t always so lucky, says occupational therapist Kelly Nye, at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital's Hand Therapy Program:
Quote:His thumb does bend and straighten pretty well. That's the most motion I've ever seen out of a toe-to-thumb transfer.
Let’s hope he takes better care of this digit!
