Have you ever wondered why you get so darn horny when you're ill? It's a bizarre urge like nothing you've ever felt and you just have to get your rocks off. Well what else is there to do?!

Described as the 'Fever Dicks' or the 'Sickly Hornies,' people have been left questioning why this feeling is so strong when you're ill. One person reckons the urge comes from being bored in bed all day, while another suggests it's a result of our ancient ancestors and the horniness was a way of keeping your partner by your side when you got sick. Annoyingly, there isn't a lot of research on the matter but psychologist Dr Shawn Smith found a research paper from the 90s that might offer some scientific explanation.



The paper said something along of the lines of; when you get sick, your immune system kicks in and tries to heal you. One of the things your body uses to get itself up and running again is something called macrophages, which is a type of white blood cell, which takes over and digests foreign substances and anything that is detrimental to your health basically, which includes illness.
 


So, as the macrophages do their thing, they release something called cytokines, which are small proteins that help cells communicate with each other. One of those cytokines is called interleukin-1, which has been shown to decrease sexual appetite for female rats. On the flip side, that specific protein had no effect when injected into male rats. But when higher doses of interleukin-1 were applied, the male rat's horniness went through the roof. So there you have it - This finally explains why women just want to watch telly when they're ill and men just want to lazilly fuck everything. Although trying to explain it to your mate down the pub might be a bit of a task.

I wonder if the same goes for hangover horn. Essentially you've done a load of damage to your body one night with a bit of booze and next day the body is trying to heal it. Up rears old interleukin-1 to make you want to bang absolutely everything even with a splitting headache.

My friend gets it too, I'm not alone. It's quite the frightful experience at times. Your mind can't focus on anything else until the horn has been satiated. Very distracting.
