i would put him in the top 1000, because the man did get results. he couldn't dribble past anyone, couldn't do anything except crosses/corners/free kicks but he did them so well that i don't know what his assist stats were but i bet they were decent.
i know he worked hard during his matches but he could probably do just as well picking a square box somewhere on the wing, waiting for the ball and swinging them in all game.
if it gets results, it counts. win 20 free kicks/corners, get becks to take them all, that probably leads to a few goals... can't say that about 999 other players of the last 40 years i reckon -

I think Chris Waddle hit the nail right on the head. Beckham was very good at one point, but we haven't seen the best of him probably since 2005. No doubt he still maintains his awesome right foot, but he's been a bit-part player since 2007-08.
I don't think he should be an England coach. What are his credentials? Has he ever spoken about the game in an intellectual way? In any other case, a player like him would slowly drift from the public eye.
But this is David Beckham, one of the biggest cash cows in the world and his advisors would be damned if they don't cash in on this. They will find him something important to do. I still find it a little ridiculous that he was allowed to hold the Olympic torch up to the stadium on the opening night.
So i don't think we've heard the last of him yet, he might even be given a seat on the FA board to be their frontman, as stupid as it sounds. -
