Episode eight - season finale
The path to gaining revenge is almost here, so a final plan must be devised. During a meeting fears arise whilst gifts are exchanged. Running away is always an option during difficult circumstances. He might be your father but he wasn't your daddy. You can either choose to escape or you can chose to to be great. Business can sometimes stop what is right. Warnings must be heeded. An unexpected arrival approaches in a hail of bullets. Advancements in technology cause the past to fall. Uglyness becomes the new standard of beauty. A confrontation occurs that causes everything to go up in flames. Gates are sealed and destruction spreads. You have to choose what you want. Two new adversaries arise in the distance. Out of the ashes new beginnings can sprout. The things we love need to be cared for and waited upon. A new voyage begins.
I. NEED. SEASON TWO. NOW. This show is a work of art in every sense. It's so multi-layered and multi-dimensional, with a deft ability to brutally and elegantly touch on so many modern societal themes like race, gender, xenophobia, colonialism, disabilities, royalty, addiction, marriage, sex workers etc. The writing is some of the best I've ever seen, especially episode five. The voice acting is stellar, shoutout to Kenneth Branagh. The characters are lovable, everyone needs a friend like Ringo and a fiancé like Akemi. If this was a live-action show set in a contempary period and based in a Western country, it would easily be nominated for Oscars and Emmys. But I fear that due to it being animated, the general public will overlook how outstanding this story is and won't give it the opportunity it deserves, until it is inevitably remade like Infernal Affairs was turned into The Departed.
