  judging by the way it'swritten i think he's being serious, but the thougt of blanc being a good free transfer was a joke. i swear when he replaced stam it kinda cost them the league.

  Argued from that point of view its not the fairest assessment because you are comparing Blanc to Stam and that's not the argument. What Utd did was lose Stam and then replaced him at no cost with a defender that still kept them in a champions league position. They may have been weaker than with stam but to stay that high in the league and not pay any extra is not a bad investment. I don't agree that he was the best however he can be argued along with many for the second spot.

  he was very poor for man utd at the back and i'd say he cost them more points than he earned for them, plus i'm sure he was on big wages so wasn't that cheap.

  Well if we go by wages then nobody was cheap not even Sol Campbell. If u count value for money and points gained or saved then I would say that Brad Friedel from Liverpool to Blackburn.

  Not quite a free but a snip at 3.5 million. Worth 5 times that just for the goal in the champions league final. Also the perfect fit to fill a void left by king eric at the time.

  Dean Richards was a great one for Southampton. Got him on a free from Wolves and he was an absolute rock for 2 seasons. Ended up selling him to Spurs for £8.1m, which was a record for an uncapped player at the time.
