Cameras were pretty expensive in them days, far too valuable to leave unattended. To avoid damage, producers would often fasten a human (far less expensive) to the front of the car to look after it.
Not even having a camera taped to his helmet (on the set of Le Mans) can make Steve McQueen look a dickhead.
