A look back in to the past, from the future. Delivered to you in the present. Part two coming soon (define soon).
AUGUST
An awfully dramatic transfer deadline day sees Wayne Rooney finally complete his move to Chelsea for a fee of £35m. Luis Suarez gets his move to Arsenal as well, with the Gunners shelling out £40m plus £4.37 plus a Monster Munch multipack (pickled onion flavour) for the Uruguay forward. Gareth Bale isn’t so lucky though, a faulty fax machine at White Hart Lane puts paid to his dream Real Madrid move and the Wales midfielder is seen to be visibly distraught outside the ground as the clock strikes midnight, and the window slams shut. The excitement is all too much for Jim White and Mr Deadline literally explodes live on Sky Sports News at 23:57, resulting in an 8-minute break in transmission.
Less glamorous, but no less curious, is Newcastle’s last minute business. In a flurry of deadline day activity, the Geordies sign Marcus Gayle, Marcus Bent, Marvin Gaye, Efan Ekoku and Jason Euell. Suspicions and accusations of mistaken identity/casual racism are immediately levelled at Joe Kinnear, while Alan Shearer, in an interview with TalkSport, questions how effective the legendary Motown man will be in the holding role, on account of him being shot dead 29 years ago.
On the pitch, Chelsea win their first three games of the season, including a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford watched over by a smug looking Wayne Rooney in the stands. Manuel Pellegrini’s start at Man City is less successful though, as they lose to newly promoted Cardiff and Hull, and only manage a draw at home to Newcastle. The pressure is well and truly on.
SEPTEMBER
Despite having signed Marouane Fellaini midway through August, David Moyes remains unconvinced by his midfield options and persuades Paul Scholes to come out of retirement for a second time, with the ginger one making his comeback in the home win against Crystal Palace. However, an injury to Michael Carrick in the game against West Brom prompts speculation that Bryan Robson is about to be offered a player-coach deal at Old Trafford.
Alan Pardew becomes the first Premier League manager to lose his job after a row with Kinnear over Gaye being left on the bench against Hull. JFK takes over with immediate effect.
After serving the final 6 games of his 10-match ban, Luis Suarez is back in trouble on his return at Swansea, punching the same ball-boy who was ‘stamped’ on by Eden Hazard. There’s no question of contact this time though, with the poor lad losing 4 teeth in the incident. Suarez receives a 14 game ban.
Things get no better for Man City as they lose the Manchester derby, get turned over away to Villa and only manage a draw against former boss Mark Hughes’ Stoke side. Rumours surface of a meeting between Khaldoon al-Mubarak and Harry Redknapp. Could Pellegrini be about to be replaced?
